In 1870, Rickmer Clasen Rickmers noted that his returning trade ships to Bremen from Eastern Asia were using sacks of rice to provide a form of ballast.With his inherent business sense, by 1872 the rice mill ‘Ichon & Co’ became ‘Ichon & Rickmers’ by 1878 the rice mill had grown to the largest in the world.
